20337-413 ABSTRACT A procedure for pre-treating the elements of a gas- tight coupler-type pipe connections with metallic sealing seats and stop shoulders, permits repeated coupling of casing and tubing that is of highly-alloyed steel, for use in the oil and natural gas industry. The seal and thread areas of the coupler are provided with a metallic coating, e.g. of copper, and prior to coupling have a lubricant applied to the cleaned sealing and thread areas. For connection elements that are of austenitic steels with chromium and nickel contents of greater than 20%-wt and molybdenum contents greater than 2.5%-wt, as well as of austenitic materials with nickel contents of greater than 50%-wt and chromium and molybdenum contents greater than 10%-wt, prior to coupling a metal-free paste, known per se, is applied as a lubricant to the coupler and to the uncoated connector ends of the tubes that are to be connected. The main constituents of the paste are silicates, titanium oxide, and zinc sulphide, as well as vegetable oils and white oils.
