A process is disclosed fox the microbiological batch production of L-carnitine from gamma-butyrobetaine and/or crotonobetaine. The process involves feeding into a culture medium containing a microorganism of the genus Pseudomonas, Rhizobium or Agrobacterium, or E. coli or a yeast of the genus Saccharomyces, gamma-butyrobetaine and/or crotonobetaine as well as betaine as C and N sources, and additionally feeding a carbon source and, after the maximum L-carnitine concentration is reached, separating the L-carnitine from the culture medium.
