In a method of treating non-toxic waste material the waste material is with a cementitious mixture containing magnesium oxide, magnesium chloride, and water. The resulting mixture is hardened to form a product having a structure including 5Mg(OH)2, 1MgCl, 8H2O. Useful building products with high compressive strength and good water resistance can be made from the waste material.
