A method of reducing failure of an alternator due to voltage spikes. A first step involves providing a voltage control resistor which automatically adjusts to the voltage applied to it until a preset voltage threshold is reached. A second step involves connecting the voltage control resistor to a rotor of the alternator. Input into the voltage control resistor comes from a positively charged pole of the rotor and output from the voltage control resistor comes to a negatively charged pole of the rotor. Any voltage spikes which exceed the preset voltage threshold are transferred from the positively charged pole of the rotor to the negatively charged pole of the rotor.
