A liquid crystal cell having a first substrate with a plurality of parallel columns of director alignment material disposed on a surface of the first substrate. Each one of the columns has a longitudinal axis disposed at an oblique angle with respect the surface of the first substrate. Each one of the columns terminates in a distal end having a surface substantially flat and substantially parallel to the surface of the first substrate. A second substrate is provided. A liquid crystal material is disposed between the surfaces of the first and second substrates with portions of such liquid crystal material being in contact with the parallel columns of director alignment material. A method for forming a liquid crystal substrate structure is provided. The method includes providing a substrate in a chamber. A surface of the substrate is subjected to a deposition flux of director alignment material with such flux passing to the substrate surface along a first axis having an oblique angle with respect to a normal to the surface of the substrate while a beam of particles is directed to the surface of the substrate along a second axis, the second axis being at an obtuse angle with respect to the first axis to produce a director alignment layer. A liquid crystal material is deposited on the director alignment layer.

La présente invention concerne une cellule à cristaux liquides faite d'un premier substrat comprenant une pluralité de colonnes parallèles de matériau d'alignement directeur disposées sur une surface du premier substrat. Chacune des colonnes comporte un axe longitudinal formant un angle oblique par rapport à la surface du premier substrat. Chacune des colonnes se termine par une extrémité distale dont la surface est sensiblement plane, parallèle à la surface du premier substrat. Le dispositif comporte également un second substrat. Du cristal liquide est disposé entre les surfaces des deux substrats, des parties de ce cristal liquide venant en contact avec les colonnes parallèles du matériau d'alignement directeur. L'invention concerne également un procédé de formation de la structure du substrat du cristal liquide. Ce procédé implique la réalisation d'un substrat dans une chambre. On soumet une surface du substrat à un flux de dépôt de matériau d'alignement directeur en faisant arriver ce flux sur la surface du substrat selon un premier axe en oblique par rapport à la normale de la surface du substrat, un faisceau de particules étant dirigé sur la surface du substrat selon un second axe formant un angle obtus par rapport au premier axe de façon à produire une couche d'alignement directeur. Du cristal liquide est déposé sur la couche d'alignement directeur.
