polymer electrolytes are described that comprise a sulfonated aromatic polyether ketone, e.g. of the formula II Image where A is from 0.2 to 1, c is from 0 to 0.8, and a + c = 1. The polymer electrolytes are prepared by dissolving an aromatic polyether ketone in 94-97% by weight sulfuric acid and adding a sulfonating agent, e.g. oleum, to the solution until the sulfuric acid concentration is from 98 to 99.9 % by weight.
