This invention is anatomically contoured an- terior cervical plates (2) with bone ingrowth sur- faces, providing for intersegmental compressive pre-loading, and a rigid and locked interface: to all of the bone screws (30), with those engaging the vertebrae deployed in highly convergent pairs. The bone screws (30) have a tapered self-tapping; lead- ing end, an increasing root diameter with a gen- erally constant outer diameter with a thread that is narrow and sharp throughout, and an enlarged head portion capable of an interference fit to the receiving holes (6) in the plate (2). Instrumentation consists of plate holders (130), a compression ap- paratus (100), and a pilot hole forming device (60) that interlocks with the plate.
