Disclosed is an all-metal catalyst for the oxidation of gaseous sulphur compounds, more particularly hydrogen sulphide, in an oxygen-containing atmosphere. The catalyst consists of a metal alloy of 5 to 70% by weight nickel and 30 to 95% by weight copper as residue and has been thermally treated at temperatures of 400 to 1,000°C in an oxygen- containing atmosphere for 0.25 to 5 hours. Substantially no sulphur trioxide is formed by using the catalyst and, when gases containing the gaseous sulphur compounds and 5 to 15% by volume of steam are oxidized, a high turnover of carbon monoxide sulphide to carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide is achieved.
