A method of preparing magnesium alcoholates Mg(OR)2 (where R = alkyl residue having 2 to 10 carbon atoms) is described. Addition products of 1,3- dienes to magnesium metal are reacted with an alcohol R-OH in a polar, aprotic solvent.
