A sucker rod having scrapers mounted on its shank for preventing accumulation of waxes, paraffins and the like from the shank of the rod and from the internal surfaces of a well tubing in which the sucker rod is reciprocably movable, and a rod string having such scrapers mounted on at least some of the shanks of the rods, the scrapers being long enough to extend past areas of enlarged internal diameter of well head equipment to prevent damage thereto from contact with upwardly or downwardly facing surfaces defining such areas of enlarged diameter in passing therepast; some of the scrapers also acting as centralizers for supporting portions of the sucker rod string which extend through substantially horizontal portions of the well tubing.
