The invention provides a device for packaging an article which includes reduced number of parts, which is light-weight, which enables simple packaging and depackaging operation, and which is superior in terms of rust-proofing and dust-proofing properties. The invention also provides a method for packaging an article. According to the invention, an article 1 is placed on a base table 2 having a peripheral wall 7 of an appropriate height. A packaging sheet 3 having flexibility and air-tightness is put over the article 1. The peripheral edge 3a of the packaging sheet 3 is sealingly engaged with the peripheral wall 7 of the base table 2. A connection pipe 10 provided at the base table 2 or the packaging sheet 3 is connected to a vacuum pump 12, so as to evacuate the space within the packaging sheet 3. The article 1 is pressingly urged against the base table 2 by means of the pressure difference across the packaging sheet 3, by reason of the atmospheric pressure, so as to be fixed to the base table 2.
