An operator for opening and closing movable barriers such as garage doors comprising a pass-point system which is a component of an operating head. The operator also comprises a motor and a transmission assembly for transmitting power from the motor to the barrier. A controller is used to set a limit point and for controlling motor operation. The controller is responsive to an input command and generates a signal for enabling the motor to move the barrier approximately to the limit point, stopping approximately at the limit point. A limit system includes a pass point system which defines an intermediate reference point and which provides a pass point signal to the controller when the intermediate reference point is passed so that subsequent displacement may be measured with respect to the intermediate reference point.
