A design information system receives and stores design information in a database in an easily accessible platform independent form. The design information system is capable of receiving information in any of a number of different formats and translating the information into an appropriate format for storage. The design information can then be extracted from the database by a program or application for construction of a desired object. The design information is stored to provide ease of translation across platforms and for continued usefulness with newly developed platforms and environments.
