The invention relates to a process for the preparation of acylglycine derivatives of the formula (I) (I) Image in which R1 is hydrogen, a saturated, straight-chain, branched or cyclic (C1-C26)alkyl radical, a mono- or polyunsaturated, straight-chain, branched or cyclic (C2-C24)alkenyl radical, a (C6-C18)aryl radical, a (C1-C10)alkyl-(C6-C18)aryl radical or an optionally polyunsaturated (C2-C10)alkenyl-(C6-C18)aryl radical, R2 is hydrogen, a saturated, straight-chain, branched or cyclic (C1-C26)alkyl radical, a mono- or polyunsaturated, straight-chain, branched or cyclic (C2-C23)alkenyl radical, a (C6-C18)aryl radical, a (C1- C10)alkyl-(C6-C18)aryl radical or an optionally polyunsaturated (C2-C10)alkenyl-(C6-C18)aryl radical and R3 is hydrogen, a saturated, straight-chain, branched or cyclic (C1-C10)alkyl radical, a mono- or polyunsaturated, straight-chain, branched or cyclic (C2-C10)alkenyl radical, a (C6-C18)aryl radical, a (C1- C10)alkyl-(C6-C18)aryl radical or an optionally polyunsaturated (C2-C10)alkenyl-(C6-C18)aryl radical, which comprises reacting a carboxylic acid amide of the formula (II) (II) Image in which R1 and R2 have the abovementioned meaning, with an aldehyde of the formula R3CHO in the presence of a solvent and an acid to give an acylaminomethylol of the formula (III) (III) Image and then carbonylating this, after addition of a cobalt carbonyl catalyst, at a temperature of 20 to 150°C under a CO pressure of 1 to 150 bar.
