ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE There is provided a novel plasmid in which (i) a promoter capable of regulating the expression of a foreign protein in an animal cell and (ii) a DNA encoding dihydro- folate reductase (DHFR) upstream of which an urokinase (UK) promoter is ligated are incorporated. The plasmid may also be designed to incorporate therein (i) a DNA encoding a foreign protein upstream of which a promoter capable of regulating the expression of the protein an animal cell is ligated and (ii) a DNA encoding dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) upstream of which an urokinase (UK) promoter is ligated. These plasmids are useful for the mass production of a foreign protein such as plasminogen activator, in an animal ceil by genetic engineering.
