Disclosed are peptide-metal composite materials that comprise small linear polypeptides at least some of which feature rare-earth metals coordinated to acids or bases in their side chains. The resulting composites crystallize in smectic-like arrays over length scales much longer than those of the molecular dimensions. The resulting crystals (1-2 mg) were insulating and transparent in the visible spectrum. The rare earths form quasi-two dimensional sheets with a separation distance determined by the linear dimension of the oligopeptide. The magnetization, M(B,T), was determined down to 2 K and in fields to 5.5 T using SQUID magnetometry. All samples were paramagnetic. Crystalline electric field modification of the magnetization was evident in isothermal M(B) for dysprosium (Dy)-based composites.

L'invention concerne des matériaux composites peptide-métal qui contiennent de petits polypeptides linéaires dont certains au moins présentent des métaux des terres rares liés à des acides ou à des bases dans leurs chaînes latérales. Les composites selon l'invention cristallisent en réseaux de type smectiques sur des échelles de longueur bien supérieures à celles des dimensions moléculaires. Les cristaux résultants (1-2 mg) sont isolants et transparents dans le spectre visible. Les terres rares forment des feuilles quasiment bidimensionnelles présentant une distance de séparation déterminée par la dimension linéaire de l'oligopeptide. La magnétisation, M(B,T), est mise en évidence par magnétométrie SQUID jusqu'à 2 K et dans des champs jusqu'à 5,5 T. Tous les échantillons sont paramagnétiques. La modification du champ électrique cristallin de la magnétisation se manifeste dans M(B) isotherme pour des composites à base de dysprosium (Dy).
