The present invention is directed to overcoming bandwidth limitations of network backbones (10) to allow for true national participation in multi-user applications across a large scale network (20). Three techniques are used to minimize the amount of backbone loading: (1) a fully distributed system architecture is described that retains national participation in each application environment by allocating resources among responsible servers (22) at remote locations; (2) Multiple zones of interest are defined within an application environment so that only relevant data applicable to each participant (1-100) within a given application environment is transmitted across the network backbone; and (3) seamless multi-server management is described that provides interaction across application environment regional boundaries without sacrificing continuity among participants or increasing the number of postcards transmitted. The present invention therefore provides a distributed system that offers multi-user applications nationwide interaction among participants within the present bandwidth limitations of existing network backbones.
La présente invention se rapporte à un système permettant de surmonter les limites relatives à la largeur de bande des réseaux de base (10) de sorte qu'une participation au niveau national réelle soit possible dans des applications multi-utilisateurs sur un réseau à grande échelle (20). Trois techniques sont utilisées pour minimiser le niveau de charge sur la structure: (1) une architecture de système entièrement répartie retient la possibilité de participation nationale dans chaque environnement d'application par allocation des ressources parmi des serveurs responsables (22) au niveau d'emplacements éloignés; (2) plusieurs zones importantes sont définies dans un environnement d'application de sorte que seules les données pertinentes applicables à chaque participant (1-100) dans un environnement d'application donné soient transmises sur le réseau de base; et (3) une gestion multi-serveurs continue assure une interaction par-dessus les limites régionales de l'environnement d'application sans perte de continuité entre les participants ou augmentation du nombre de paquets de données dits "cartes postales" transmis. La présente invention fournit ainsi un système réparti qui permet aux applications multi-utilisateurs de bénéficier d'une interaction étendue au niveau national parmi les participants, dans les limites actuelles des largeurs de bande des réseaux de base existants.
