A belt filter press for dewatering a mixture of liquid and a solid material comprises a frame supporting a pair of operably communicating continuous belts supported on an assembly of rollers. The belts travel over a wedge section leading to a primary roller and a series of secondary rollers. The wedge section comprises a plurality of parallel spaced slat-like supports defining a planar section transitioning to a curved section. The primary roller comprises a plurality of wings over which the belts pass extending radially from the roller axle. Enclosed belt washers with replaceable resilient wipers remove dewatering material adhering to the belts. An automatically adjustable belt positioning assembly monitors the lateral translation of the belts and controls the attitude of a support roller to maintain the belts in the proper position on the rollers.
