A sports mask especially suited for, although not exclusively limited to, use with the sport of ringette has a peripheral frame that mounts on a sports helmet and a mesh of wires extending diagonally across the mask in opposite directions. The mesh openings are quadrilateral, preferably rhombic, with their longer diagonals extending across the mask. The mesh size may be made small enough to prevent the penetration of the mask with a ringette stick, while remaining sufficiently robust to resist the anticipated impact. At the same time, the wearer's vision is not excessively impaired.
