A rail pulling apparatus is adapted for attachment to lift arms of a loader vehicle adapted for travel on fined rails of a railway, the attachment such that the apparatus can be raised and lowered by the lift arms. The apparatus comprises rear clamping mechanisms operative to clamp to corresponding right and left fixed rails of a railway on which the loader vehicle is adapted to travel. Front clamping mechanisms are each operative to clamp to a loose rail portion extending forward of the loader vehicle, and right and left pulling actuators are each operative to move a corresponding one of the front clamping mechanisms rearward toward a corresponding rear clamping mechanism. A lateral actuator is operative to move the front clamping mechanisms laterally with respect to the fixed rails.
