A system comprising a local processor (14) capable of accessing a host system (12) typically comprising one database, is provided with a communication processor (20) which controls synchronous serial communication between the host system (12) and a plurality of synchronous devices in a varied ranged of clocked rates. The communication processor(20)facilitates remoting of a single terminal (18) having resident protocol conversion control capability (36), while a related plurality of terminals (16, 17) locally access a host system via a single hosts synchronous port.
