A circuit and method of detecting mode hop in a tunable laser is provided wherein input light is tapped from the laser and is passed through a Fabry Perot etalon. An output signal from the Fabry Perot etalon and a reference signal are converted to electrical signals producing a single output electrical signal. This signal is provided to differentiator circuit, which is capable of detecting voltage spikes indicative of mode hop. The circuit is also utilized in a novel test system of this invention.
