A method and apparatus for decentralized peripheral management is described. The invention may be utilized in a portable electronic computer having a centralprocessor, a system clock, and a system bus in which a self-managed peripheral subsystem comprises a peripheral device, a peripheral device controller, and a peripheral subsystem clock. The peripheral subsystem is self-managed and may operate independent of the central processor. Each self-managed peripheral subsystem mayfurther operate independent of the other peripheral subsystems.
