Photochromic compounds, their preparation and their use Abstract Compounds of the formulae I and II or mixtures of compounds of the formula I andcompounds of the formula II, and their anaquinones, Image (I), Image (II), in which X is -O-, -S- or-NR8-, R1 and R2, independently of one another, are H, C1-C4alky1, C1-C4alkoxy, phenyl, benzyl, -OR9, -CN, -CO2R10, -CO-R11, halogen, or R1 and R2 together are -CH=CR12-CR13=CH-; R3 is the -OR9 group and R4 is H, halogen or the -OR9 group; R5 and R6, independently of one another, are as defined for R1 and R2, or R5 and R6 together are 1,2-benzobuta-1,3-diene-1,4-diyl; R7 is H, halogen or the -OR9 group; R8 is H, linear or branched C1-C18alkyl, or phenyl or benzyl, each of which is unsubstituted or substituted by C1-C4alkyl or C1-C4alkoxy; R9 is C6-C14aryl which is unsubstituted or substituted by C1-C12alkyl, C1-C12alkoxy, C1-C12alkylthio, C1-C12alkylsulfinyl, C1-C12alkylsulfonyl, phenyl, benzyl, -CN, -CF3, halogen, -CO-R11 or-CO2R10; R10 is H, C1-C18alkyl, cyclohexyl, cyclopentyl, phenyl, C1-C12alkylphenyl, benzyl or C1-C12alkylbenzy1; R1, is H, C1-C4alkyl or phenyl; and R12 and R13, independently, are as defined for R1 and R2, are photochromic and are suitable for contrasting, light absorption and for information recording.
