A transverse sealer (11) on a bag forming and filling machine has two sealing jaws (31, 32) with flat sealing surfaces (33, 34) arranged in a space (16) between two pairs of clamping jaws (12, 13; 14, 15) and a blade (35) to divide the transverse seam produced by the sealing jaws (31, 32) longitudinally. To shield the blade (35) from the heat of the sealing jaws (31, 32), it is arranged separately from said jaws (31, 32) and can be moved in its inoperative position outside the area of movement of the sealing jaws (31, 32). To this end, there is an aperture (46) in one of the clamping jaws (14) to accept the blade (35) in its inoperative position, through which an arm (36) supporting the blade (35) also projects.
