The invention relates to a process for preparing grafted thermoplastic polymers in which at least one thermoplastic polymer (A) is grafted with a functional monomer in the presence of a substance that inhibits or reduces cross-linking or depolymerization of (A) This substance can be a stable nitroxide radical. The grafted polymers are useful as compatibility agents in polymer blends and as coextrusion binding agents. The invention also concerns multi-layer structures comprising these binding agents.
