A method for making glycol in an adiabatic reactor system including feeding water and an epoxide into at least one adiabatic reactor under conditions such that epoxide and the water react to form a glycol product stream. The adiabatic reactor contains a catalyst bed which undergoes swelling during its useful lifetime, and the adiabatic reactor operates under conditions sufficient to reduce the rate of catalyst swelling relative to a non-adiabatic reactor system. Other aspects of the invention include the combination of splitting the feed between multiple adiabatic reactors in combination with the cross exchange of heat between feeds and products with heat exchangers, such that an energy efficient process that provides long catalyst stability and minimal catalyst swelling results.
L'invention concerne un procédé de fabrication de glycol dans un ensemble réacteur adiabatique, ce procédé consistant notamment à fournir de l'eau ainsi qu'un époxyde à au moins un réacteur adiabatique, dans des conditions aptes à faire réagir l'eau et l'époxyde de manière à former un courant d'un produit glycolé. Le réacteur adiabatique de cette invention contient un lit catalytique qui gonfle au cours de sa durée de vie utile, ce réacteur adiabatique fonctionnant par ailleurs dans des conditions suffisantes pour faire baisser la vitesse de gonflement de ce catalyseur par rapport à celle d'un ensemble réacteur non adiabatique. D'autres aspects de cette invention concernent en outre la division de l'alimentation entre plusieurs réacteurs adiabatiques, cette division étant combinée à un échange de chaleur entre ladite alimentation et les produits susmentionnés et des échangeurs thermiques, de sorte qu'un processus énergétique efficace permet d'obtenir un catalyseur présentant à la fois une stabilité satisfaisante et un gonflement réduit.
