A clinical laboratory integrated screening and diagnostic system for preprocessing and inspection of cytological samples or other specimens. A processor receives digital images of each specimen and, using statistical analysis, estimates probabilities of atypia for objects or regions contained in the specimen. Based at least in part on these probabilities, the procesor then estimates a probability of atypia for the specimen as a whole. A specimen having high enough estimated probability of atypia is automatically categorized as suspicious or abnormal and is in turn screened by a human technician with the assistance of a preview system and a computer-assisted microscope workstation. A sample with sufficiently low or no probability of atypia is automatically categorized as apparently within normal limits and is then either screened by a human technician for quality assurance or automatically reported as within normal limits. After screening by the human technician, samples that the technician deems to be suspicious or abnormal are reviewed by an expert for final diagnosis.
Un système de dépistage et de diagnostic intégré dans un laboratoire de biologie médicale permet d'effectuer le prétraitement et l'inspection de prélèvements cytologiques ou d'autres échantillons. Un processeur reçoit des images numériques de chaque échantillon et, par analyse statistique, estime les probabilités d'atypie pour des objets ou des régions contenues dans l'échantillon. Le processeur qui se fonde au moins en partie sur ces probabilités estime ensuite une probabilité d'atypie pour l'échantillon d'une manière globale. Un échantillon dont la probabilité d'atypie estimée est suffisamment importante est automatiquement classé comme suspect ou anormal et est à son tour examiné par un technicien humain au moyen d'un système de visualisation et d'un poste de travail de microscope assisté par ordinateur. Un échantillon présentant une probabilité d'atypie suffisamment faible ou nulle est automatiquement classé comme se situant apparemment dans les limites normales et est ensuite examiné par un technicien humain qui effectue la vérification de la qualité ou bien il est classé automatiquement comme se situant dans les limites normales. Après la vérification effectuée par le technicien humain, les échantillons que ce dernier estime comme étant suspects ou anormaux sont réinspectés par un expert qui pose le diagnostic final.
