A recording and reproducing device for rewritable recording media having absolute addresses provides a TOC area wherein information about the location of data on the media can be stored, means to update the TOC data whenever data is written to the media, display means to visually indicate occupied and unoccupied regions of the media, first editing means for erasing the information located in the TOC area, second editing means for detecting the length and position of a partially erased block of data stored on the media and, depending upon whether the length of the block of data is greater or less than a predetermined length, either updating the TOC as to the new starting location of the remaining block of data, or erasing from the TOC the additional information about the data block.
