The inventive composition is based on zirconium oxide and at least one additive selected from zirconium oxide and at least one additive chosen from praseodymium, lanthanum or neodymium oxides. It has a specific surface of at least 29 m2/g after calcination at 1000 °C during a period of 10 hours. The composition is obtained by a method wherein a mixture of zirconium compounds and additive is precipitated with a base; the medium thus obtained, containing a precipitate, is heated and a compound chosen from anionic surfactants, non-ionic surfactants, polyethylene glycols, carboxylic acids and the salts thereof and surfactants such as the ethoxylates of caroboxymethyl fatty alcohols is added to the compound and the precipitate is calcinated. The composition can be used as a catalyst.

La composition de l'invention est à base d'oxyde de zirconium et d'au moins un additif choisi parmi les oxydes de praséodyme, de lanthane et de néodyme. Elle présente une surface spécifique d'au moins 29 m2/g, après calcination à 1000~C pendant 10 heures. Cette composition est obtenue par un procédé dans lequel on fait précipiter avec une base un mélange des composés de zirconium et de l'additif; on chauffe le milieu obtenu qui contient un précipité; puis on ajoute à ce précipité un composé choisi parmi les tensioactifs anioniques, les tensioactifs non ioniques, les polyéthylène-glycols, les acides carboxyliques et leurs sels et les tensioactifs du type éthoxylats d'alcools gras carboxyméthylés et on calcine enfin le précipité. La composition peut être utilisée comme catalyseur.
