A contrast agent useful for imaging a sample comprising a suspension in a medium acceptable for imaging (a) particles of a contrast agent possessing paramagnetic characteristics and (b) particles of a contrast agent possessing diamagnetic characteristics. Also disclosed is a method of imaging a sample which comprises introducing into the sample the above-described contrast agent and generating a substantially artifact-free image thereof. The combination of diamagnetic barium sulfate and superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) in one suspension produces a macroscopic cancellation of positive and negative magnetic susceptibility components which eliminates susceptibility artifacts even with gradient echo pulse sequences. The relaxation properties which make the SPIO suspension a useful negative contrast agent are retained.

L'invention est un agent de contraste utilisé pour produire des images de spécimens contenant une suspension dans un milieu utilisable pour produire des images a) de particules d'un agent de contraste à caractéristiques paramagnétiques et b) de particules d'un agent de contraste à caractéristiques diamagnétiques. Est également divulguée une méthode de production d'images de spécimens qui consiste à introduire l'agent de contraste décrit ci-dessus dans un spécimen et à produire une image essentiellement exempte d'artéfacts de celui-ci. La combinaison du sulfate de baryum, qui est diamagnétique, avec un oxyde de fer superparamagnétique dans une suspension produit une annulation macroscopique des susceptibilités magnétiques positive et négative qui élimine les artéfacts de susceptibilité même en présence de suite d'impulsions d'écho de gradient. Les propriétés de relaxation qui font de cette suspension un agent de contraste négatif utile sont conservées.
