A device to absorb energy transmitted through a steering column for a vehicle in the event of a vehicle crash and/or driver impact on the steering wheel includes a slotted member (7) in the form of a saddle bracket for connection to a steering column, a second member in the form of a bolt (5) or the like extending through the slot (II) of the first member and a third member in the form of a strap (12) which is arranged to restrict relative movement between the first and second members upon vehicle crash etc. The strap (12) is stiff but ductile and is wrapped over the bolt (5) so that, if the steering column (I) collapses, the bolt will move in a direction out of the slot (II) of the first member and run into the strap (12) which is then unwrapped, thereby absorbing energy transmitted through the steering column. The strap (12) can also itself be slotted.
Dispositif servant à absorber l'énergie transmise par la colonne de direction d'un véhicule dans l'éventualité d'une collision et/ou d'un impact du chauffeur sur le volant. Le dispositif comprend un élément à fente (7) constituant un support étrier se reliant à la colonne de direction, un deuxième élément consistant en un boulon (5) ou en un dispositif connexe passant dans la fente (II) du premier élément, ainsi qu'un troisième élément consistant en une courroie (12) servant à limiter le mouvement relatif entre le premier et le deuxième élément, notamment en cas de collision. La courroie (12) est rigide, mais ductile, et est enroulée autour du boulon (5) de sorte que si la colonne de direction (I) se rétracte, le boulon se déplace hors de la fente (II) du premier élément et passe dans la courroie (12) qui s'en trouve ainsi dégagée pour absorber l'énergie transmise par la colonne de direction. La courroie (12) peut elle-même est dotée de fentes.
