Abstract of the Disclosure A shampoo composition comprises an emulsion of water; an anionic cleaning surfactant; and a di-long chain alkyl quaternary nitrogen-containing compound, wherein the two long alkyl chains bonded to the nitrogen atom have from about 12 to about 22 carbon atoms per alkyl chain and wherein the molar ratio of anionic cleaning surfactant to di-long chain alkyl quaternary nitrogen-containing compound is at least about 85 to 1. The invention permits incorporation of unex- pectedly high amounts of conditioning agents, such as hydro- carbons including long chain hydrocarbons, and silicones; and removal of oils, greases, soils, conditioning agents and the like from the hair.
