An electrode (10) provides electrical contact with a patient's skin with the electrode including a conductive member (11) for connection to an external electrical apparatus, multi-layers of ge] for providing electrical interface between the patient's skin, and the conductive member. A first layer (17) is provided which includes an electrically conductive gel having a relatively low peel strength for removably contacting the patient's skin, and a second layer (19) is provided which includes an electrically conductive gel having a relatively high peel strength for contacting the conductive member. The first, and second layers are laminated in accordance with the method of the invention. Other layers may be utilized in combination with the first, and second layers. Such layers include a scrim layer (21), and a layer including physiologically active ions (25). Further, the electrode through the use of multi-layer gels is suitable for use with garments for the selective positioning of electrodes to a patient's skin.
La présente invention concerne une électrode (10) assurant un contact électrique avec la peau du patient, cette électrode comprenant un élément conducteur (11) qui se raccorde sur un appareil électrique extérieur et des couches multiples de gel faisant office d'interface électrique entre la peau du patient et l'élément conducteur. Une première couche (17) renferme un gel électriquement conducteur qui présente une résistance au pelage relativement faible et qui est temporairement en contact avec la peau du patient cependant qu'une deuxième couche (19) dotée d'une résistance au pelage relativement élevée assure le contact avec l'élément conducteur. Les première et deuxième couche sont laminées conformément au procédé selon l'invention. D'autres couches peuvent être utilisées conjointement avec les première et deuxième couches, par exemple un canevas (21) ou une couche renfermant des ions physiologiquement actifs (25). Grâce à l'emploi de gels multicouche, l'électrode peut par ailleurs être utilisée avec des pièces de vêtement autorisant un positionnement sélectif sur la peau du patient.
