Methods and compositions for affecting the growth of cells of living tissue in mammals. The compositions comprise a metabolic inhibitor of a glycolytic pathway of cells and/or an agent which causes an increase in the concentration of intracellular sodium, and a physiologically acceptable carrier. The compositions are administered to the patient either alone or in combination with a growth factor. Depending on the desired route of administration the compositions are formulated to have either a very high water solubility or low water solubility. The highly water soluble compositions may be orally administered, whereas the low water soluble compositions may be applied directly to the location of a wound. The compositions are administered to deliver growth factor to a wound or to absorb growth factor present in the body to prevent overstimulation of the wound response. The compositions are useful as wound healing materials, including wounds associated with abnormally proliferating and/or migrating cells, for example, smooth muscle cells, which are associated with restenosis.
