ABSTRACT This invention relates to a method for the detec- tion of an analyte which generates hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a suitable oxidase in saliva which comprises contacting the saliva with a reagent system comprising an oxidase selective for the analyte, for example glucose, lactic acid, galactose or ethanol, to be detected, a peroxidatively active material and a redox indicator said indicator being selected from those indicators which have an oxidation potential, for example less than 0.54, which is sufficiently low to resist reduction by reducing agents present in the saliva.
