The present invention relates to a novel system for seafloor classification using artificial neural network (ANN) hybrid layout with the use of unprocessed multi-beam backscatter data and mare importantly, this invention relates to an real-time seafloor roughness classifier using backscatter data after training the self-organized mapping (SOM) network and teaming vector quantization (LVQ) network wherein, the system of the present invention has the unique capability for the combined use of unsupervised SOM followed by supervised LVQ to achieve a highly improved performance in the said roughness classification, which was hitherto non-existent and has the additional capability for the use of a combination of the two variants of the LVQ layout to work together to achieve the best results in seafloor roughness classification.

La présente invention se rapporte à un nouveau système de classification du plancher océanique mettant en oeuvre une représentation hybride de réseaux neuronaux artificiels (ANN) au moyen de données non traitées de rétrodiffusion de faisceaux multiples. Plus spécifiquement, cette invention se rapporte à un classificateur de rugosité de plancher océanique en temps réel utilisant des données de rétrodiffusion après entraînement du réseau de mise en correspondance à organisation automatique (SOM self-organised mapping) et du réseau de quantification vectorielle adaptative (LVQ learning vector quantization). Le système de la présente invention se caractérise en ce qu'il présente une capacité unique à utiliser de manière combinée une SOM non contrôlée suivie d'une LVQ contrôlée pour parvenir à une efficacité fortement améliorée de ladite classification de rugosité, ce qui était jusqu'à présent impossible. Ce système se caractérise en outre par une capacité à utiliser une combinaison de deux variantes de la représentation LVQ amenées à coopérer de manière à produire les meilleurs résultats de classification de rugosité du plancher océanique.
