Pharmaceutical compositions in unit dosage form, especially swallowable unit dosage form such as caplets and tablets, comprising bismuth subsalicylate and a source of chloride ions (e.g., calcium chloride) wherein the molar ratio of chloride ions to bismuth subsalicylate is greater than about 1:5.
