Process for the hydration of acrolein in the presence of a chelate forming ion exchange resin based on polystyrene/divinyl benzene as catalyst, followed by hydrogenation of the reaction mixture which has been freed from unreacted acrolein and contains 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde. By using chelate forming ion exchangers having anchoring groups corresponding to the following general formula: Image wherein Z = H, C1-C6-alkyl, -CH2-CH(CH3)-Y' or -(CH2)o-Y' and Y and/or Y' = -COOH, -OH, pyridyl or -P(O) (CH2OH)OH, hydration proceeds at lower temperatures with higher volume/time yields and in particular higher selectivity than hydration carried out with previously known ion exchangers. Resins containing methylene iminodiacetic acid anchoring groups in the H form or partially doped with alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or earth metal ions are particularly suitable.
