A preservative-free ophthalmic composition is disclosed which is useful in the treatment of conditions such as dry eye and which comprises an aqueous solution of (a) about 0.20 to 2.5 weight percent of a polymer selected form the group consisting of hydroxyalkyl cellulosics and polyalkylene glycols; (b) a non-ionic tonicity adjusting agent selected from the group consisting of mannitol, sorbitol, dextrose, sucrose, urea, glycerol, and mixtures thereof, in a amount sufficient to generate a tonicity of about 50 to 350 milliosmols per kilogram (mOsmol/kg); (c) an ionic salt which is preferably an alkali metal halide, in an amount sufficient to approximate the salt concentration of the human tear fluid; and (d) an antimicrobial in an amount sufficient to generate sufficient borate to maintain or reduce microbial concentration for a period of 12 hours to 72 hours.
Composition à usage ophtalmique dépourvue d'agents de conservation et utilisable dans le traitement des affections telles que le syndrome de Gougerot-Sjögren. Ladite composition comporte une solution aqueuse (a) de 0,20 à 2,5 % en poids environ d'un polymère sélectionné dans le groupe constitué des cellulosiques hydroxyalkyles et des polyalkylèneglycols; (b) d'un agent non ionique de régulation de la pression osmotique sélectionné dans le groupe constitué de mannitol, de sorbitol, de dextrose, de sucrose, d'urée, de glycérol et de leur mélanges, la qualité de cet agent étant suffisante pour assurer une pression osmotique de 50 à 350 milliosmoles par kilogramme (mOsmol/kg) environ; (c) d'un sel ionique, de préférence un halogénure de métal alcalin, en une quantié suffisante pour reproduire approximativement la concentration de sels du liquide lacrymal de l'homme; et (d) un agent antimicrobien en une quantité suffisante pour produire suffisamment de borate pour entretenir ou réduire les concentrations microbiennes pendant une période de 12 à 72 heures.
