The subject of the invention is a lift installation (1) with a lift cage (2), which moves in vertical direction along guide tracks (7). In the case of need the lift cage (2) is braked by a braking equipment (11) or held at standstill. The braking equipment (11) consists of at least two brake units (12). According to the invention at least one of the brake units (12), but preferably each of the brake units (12), is provided with a wear- compensating device (30) which, when the brake unit (12) is relieved, sets a clearance (If), i.e. a free distance between brake lining (15) and associated brake surface, which arises on opening of a brake, in correspondence with a substantially constant value. It is thereby achieved that use may be made of customary and thus economic brake materials which may wear during braking. (Fig. 2)
