Electropositive metals preferably having a revised Pauling electronegativity of less than 1.32 for repelling elasmobrancils and methods of using electropositive metals to repel elasmobranchs is disclosed. An apparatus for repelling elasmobranchs is provided comprising an electropositive metal, preferably lanthanide metal or mischmetal in the shape of a cylinder, cone, circle, cube, disk, bar, sphere, plate, rod, ring, tube, stick or block. An apparatus is disclosed comprising an electropositive metal and a buoy, a barge, a net, fish hook, surfboard, fishing tackle or any combination thereof.
