The present invention provides a spray deflector for use in directing pressurized fluid leaking for joints in coupled pipe sections particularly of the type for use with pipeline sections which are joined by flange and bolt connections. The spray deflector is simple and inexpensive, fits over the joint between a pair of adjacent pipe sections and controls the damage done by a leak by releasing any leaking fluid in a preferred direction, and can be retrofitted over existing pipeline joints. The spray deflector comprises a band adapted to extend around at least a portion of the joined flanges of a pair of adjacent pipe sections, a clamping means for fixing the band in place over the joined ends, and fluid release means for releasing pressurized fluid escaping from between the band and joined flanges in a preferred direction.
