ABSTRACT Alpha-alumina monohydrate (boehmite) crystals and crystal aggregates of a size and form suitable for use in soft polishing formulations are obtained by the organic oxidation of caustic aluminate liquors under hydrothermal conditions using greatly reduced copper catalyst concentration. The resulting boehmite aggregates are well suited for use in, for example, soft polishing applications where both cutting and finishing actions are required in a single formulation.
