The improved stuffing box (7), adapted to be mounted inside an oil well head incorporating a rotary pump drive (50), includes: a rotating tube (2) having a stationary seal (3) coupled to a drive shaft (1) of the well pump; a substantial transition (6) in diameter, with a lower section (5) of the tube being a suitable outside diameter to receive the component parts of the stuffing box such that the outside diameter thereof can be smaller than the outside diameter (4) of the tube ahead of said transition (6) in diameter; a pressurized oil supply (P) for lubricating the rotary seal packing (15) at the opposed end of the packing from the internal pressure of the well; the tube being mounted rotatively (8) on the housing (9) such that the lower section of the tube can extend into a web (10) of the stuffing box (7); wherein the stuffing box comprises: located at the bottom end (12) of the tube, an axial stop ring (13), a retaining ring (14) for a first packing (15), followed by a spring (16) mounted within jackets (17), for abutting the spring against the first packing (15) and a second packing (18); an adjustment ring (19) held against said second packing (18) by at least one screw (20) having a conical end (21) received inside at least one mating conical seat (22) formed in the adjustment ring.

L~invention concerne un presse-étoupe perfectionné (7), conçu pour être monté à l~intérieur d~une tête de puits de pétrole incorporant un mécanisme d~entraînement de pompe rotatif (50), et comportant : un tube rotatif (2) doté d~un joint d~étanchéité fixe (3) couplé à un arbre d~entraînement (1) de la pompe du puits ; une transition importante (6) de diamètre, un tronçon inférieur (5) du tube présentant un diamètre extérieur apte à recevoir les parties constitutives du presse-étoupe et inférieur au diamètre extérieur (4) du tube en aval de ladite transition (6) de diamètre ; une alimentation en huile sous pression (P) servant à graisser une garniture d~étanchéité rotative (15) au niveau de son extrémité opposée à la pression interne du puits ; le tube étant monté rotatif (8) sur un boîtier (9) de façon à ce que son tronçon inférieur puisse pénétrer dans un corps (10) du presse-étoupe (7). Le presse-étoupe est caractérisé en ce qu~il comprend : au niveau de l~extrémité inférieure (12) du tube, une bague d~arrêt axiale (13), une bague de retenue (14) pour une première garniture (15), suivie d~un ressort (16) monté dans un manchon (17) servant à mettre le ressort en butée sur la première garniture (15) et une deuxième garniture (18) ; une bague de réglage (19) maintenue contre la deuxième garniture (18) par au moins une vis (20) présentant une extrémité conique (21) reçue à l~intérieur d~au moins un siège conique complémentaire (22) formé dans la bague de réglage.
