There is provided cross-linked, nitrosylated hemoglobin having cross- links between hemoglobin sub-units so as to prevent its dissociation into units of molecular weight less than abut 64 kD, and containing S-nitrosyl -S-N=O groups on cysteine residues of its globin chains, constituting both an oxygen- transporting and NO-transporting composition for administration to mammalian patients.
