An Internet-based operating system whereby use of data and application software (116) stored on a server (112) may be selectively downloaded to a client device (108) upon request therefrom allowing server-based applications to be accessed and executed on the client device. Because secure communication may readily be established between the server and the client device, many traditional problems of remote data access are overcome. Application software, typically Java code, provides an inherently virus-proof programming language. The end user, operating a client device may access a wide variety of application software with no need to purchase, install, and maintain the software on his machine. Using an easy-to-use GUI, a user selects an application, opens existing or creates new files. The application executable code is identified by a link embedded in a stream of markup language, typically XML. The operating system allows complex applications to be executed on thin clients having limited memory/storage capacity.
La présente invention concerne un système d'exploitation basé sur Internet, des données et des logiciels d'application hébergés par un serveur, pouvant être téléchargés de façon sélective vers un dispositif client à la demande de celui-ci, ce qui permet l'accès à des applications basées sur le serveur, et leur exécution sur le dispositif client. Comme la communication sécurisée peut facilement être établie entre le serveur et le dispositif client, de nombreux problèmes traditionnels posés par l'accès à distance, peuvent être évités. Le logiciel d'application, en général en code Java, fournit un langage de programmation ayant résistance inhérente aux virus. L'utilisateur terminal qui se sert d'un dispositif client, peut accéder à une grande variété de logiciels d'application, sans avoir à acheter, installer, et tenir à jour le logiciel sur sa machine. Le code exécutable de l'application est identifié par un lien intégré à un train de langage de balisage, en général XML. Le système d'exploitation permet à des applications complexes d'être exécutées sur de petits dispositifs clients ayant une capacité de stockage/mémoire limitée.
