A technique treats a protected forwarding adjacency (FA) as a dynamic entity in that it allows a backup tunnel associated with the FA to carry traffic for the FA, when it's primary tunnel has failed, up to a predetermined amount of time. If after the predetermined amount of time has elapsed and the FA has not recovered (e.g., the primary tunnel has not been reestablished), a network topology change is automatically triggered causing the network to converge on a new network topology. By triggering the network topology change, a path that is more optimal than the path associated with the backup tunnel may be subsequently determined to carry the traffic.

L'invention concerne un procédé consistant à traiter un chemin de réacheminement par noeuds adjacents (FA: forwarding adjacency) protégé comme une entité dynamique, en permettant le transport du trafic à travers par un tunnel de secours associé au FA en cas de défaillance du tunnel principal, pendant une durée maximale prédéterminée. A la fin de cette durée prédéterminée, si le FA ne fonctionne toujours pas (autrement dit si le tunnel principal n'a pas été rétabli), une modification de la topologie du réseau est automatiquement activée, et fait converger le réseau sur une nouvelle topologie. L'activation de la modification de topologie du réseau permet l'identification subséquente d'un chemin supérieur au chemin associé au tunnel de secours pour le transport du trafic.
