A method is disclosed for enabling multiple telecommunications terminals that are associated with a common user to notify the user of the arrival of an incoming message via a ringtone. A first signal is received at a second telecommunications terminal that represents an instance of a predetermined musical composition from a first telecommunications terminal. A message directed to a user who is associated with the first telecommunications terminal and with the second telecommunications terminal is also received at the second terminal via a path that bypasses the first telecommunications terminal. A second signal is output based on the first signal to notify the user of the arrival of the message. The value of a first musical property of the instance is based on an attribute of the second telecommunications terminal and the first musical property is independent of melody.
