A leaf spring for use in holding the valve of a fire extinguisher container closed has a surface irregularity in the form of a stick-up projection. When the leaf spring is flexed inwardly so that the spring can be installed on the fire extinguisher, the surface irregularity or projection is gripped by the jaws of the pliers so that the spring is retained within the jaws of the pliers. The surface irregularity thus facilities installation and replacement of springs for fire extinguishers.
